Each Month we will post some significant responses to some of the feedback we have received at feedback@hertscomets.co.uk.

Why is the Lacrosse team called the Hertfordshire Comets? In trying to create an identity for the club it seemed fitting to apply a similar team approach as that of many professional lacrosse teams. Initially we short listed 4 names for the team, the Hertfordshire Hawks, Hammerheads, Hornets and Comets. After much discussion with current team members, members of the public, students and student union staff it was decided that the Hertfordshire Comets was the name most in keeping with the nature of the sports and the heritage of Hatfield.

What is Lacrosse, and is it dangerous? Lacrosse is an old American Indian game (see Lacrosse history elsewhere on this site). As for the game being dangerous... The team we currently have plays in a mixed league and plays by the rules of women's lacrosse. As such the rules state that there is to be no contact between players, so no it is not dangerous. However the men's game is a full contact sport and could be considered dangerous if correct protection isn't worn. Men play with full rib pads, shoulder, chest and back pads, gloves, elbow and forearm pads and helmets with visors. Most of the men who play the game consider it a fun, fast paced game, not a dangerous one!

What equipment will I need to play? The team has a good selection of equipment for training and matches. Initially all our training is likely to take place on the Astroturf on College Lane so you will need appropriate trainers or astroturf boots. Some games might be played on grass pitches requiring studded boots. As soon as we know for definite we will pass a message round the team. Eventually you might also want your own stick but I would recommend waiting till you know what you'd like. Personalised team tops will also be available, however we can only place orders for 6 or more at a time so make sure you order yours when we are making a bulk buy!

How much is it to join? There is a standard Student Union charge for clubs visit the main SU office to pay your membership fees (Don't forget to apply for/pick up your NUS card while you're at it!)

When is training held? When are the matches? All the current information about training and matches can be found under Calendar on this site.
