... And Show Me What You're Made Of!
A new year is upon us and with it the prospect of getting back into an organised version of the random bits of exercise that we’ve all been urging ourselves to do over the summer. Granted, the weather was crap – that’s one excuse – and there was a decent amount of sport on TV to watch from the comfort of your sofa or the nearest pub – that’s another.
But while the majority of you have been slaving over a cold pint or putting your highly evolved opposable thumbs to good work on the Playstation, a few of us have created a new sports club for those of you looking for something different. If you think it’s for girls or that it sounds too much like prancing around a hockey pitch with a fishing net then the Comets are here to teach you a few lessons about the game of Lacrosse.
Originating in continental North America almost 300 years ago, Lacrosse was a game invented by the Native American Indians. It’s no wonder then that this game, often denounced as being soft, is one of the more brutal sports that Herts will have seen in a long time.
Of course, it’s only brutal if you’re a strapping bloke who wants nothing more than to launch a hard, rubber ball at a poor, beleaguered goalie or if you simply want to knock people over whilst running at speed swinging a three foot stick as you go. The more subtle, female version is a non-contact sport. This is ultimately more graceful than the men’s game and requires a little more skill, especially with ball control (no sniggering lads).
The final version is a mixed team which plays by female rules and has six men and six women to each side. As the Comets is a new club the initial emphasis will be placed on our Mixed Squad. Hopefully enough interest will be generated to create both a Men’s and a Women’s Squad but until then we have fixtures for the East Midlands Mixed League, and our first game is on the 17 th October 2004 at 1pm away to Cambridge.
So, those of you interested in getting fit and staying there, or those wanting to try something different from the more obvious sports we offer; the Comets warmly invite you to join the squad, train for the first match and, most importantly, shout encouragement from the sidelines as we pound Cambridge into oblivion.
